Does Running the AC Really Use More Fuel?

It's a question we hear all the time - does turning on your car’s air conditioning actually burn more fuel?

The short answer is yes, but the full story is a bit more nuanced.

At Northside Autohaus, we’ve tested this across a range of vehicles, especially European models like Audi, BMW, and VW. While it’s true the AC system draws power from the engine, the impact on fuel economy is often overstated. In most modern cars, the difference is minimal unless there’s something wrong with the system.

How Car Air Conditioning Affects Fuel Consumption

When you switch on the aircon, you’re engaging a component called the compressor. This is belt-driven and powered by the engine. As it runs, it places a slight additional load on the engine, which can increase fuel usage.

In older vehicles or those with large displacement engines, this could have meant a noticeable hit to fuel economy. But in today’s fuel-injected, computer-managed engines, the effect is typically small, usually less than 0.5 litres per 100km in normal driving conditions.

Where fuel use becomes a concern is when the system is not running efficiently.

When Aircon Actually Affects Fuel Economy

We’ve seen multiple cases where inefficient systems start dragging on performance and economy. Some of the most common causes include:
  • Low refrigerant levels that force the compressor to work harder
  • Blocked cabin air filters that restrict airflow and cooling efficiency
  • Faulty AC sensors or control valves that affect engine idle or load
  • Compressor clutch wear leading to rough engagement and increased strain

In these cases, even if the aircon is technically working, it's no longer efficient, and yes, it will start affecting your fuel bill more than it should.

Many of these issues show up during a standard air conditioning service and diagnostic check, especially if your system hasn’t been looked at in over 2 years.

What Our Workshop Testing Shows

We’ve run real-world fuel usage comparisons in common European models (Golf, A3, 3 Series) with and without the AC running. Across all of them:
  • The fuel difference was marginal in normal traffic
  • Idling with the AC running showed a slightly higher consumption rate
  • Faulty systems created the biggest fuel increases (up to 10 percent more use)

In other words, a healthy AC system has very little impact on your fuel use. But a poorly maintained one can absolutely cost you more, not just in petrol, but in comfort and repair bills later.

Simple Tips to Keep AC Efficient

  • Run the AC regularly, even in winter, to keep seals and gas circulating
  • Replace cabin filters annually to maintain airflow
  • Service the system every 2 years to check refrigerant, pressure, and cooling performance
  • Listen for odd noises when the compressor kicks in, it could be wearing out
Most importantly, don’t wait for the AC to fail completely. Regular servicing helps it run better, use less fuel, and keep the cabin cool without strain.

Could not be happier with Northside Autohaus. From my fist point of call speaking with Romeo, he was quick to fit me in as my Audi Q5 was leaking adblue liquid and needed urgent attention. When arriving at Autohause, Romeo was there to greet my with kindness and respect. He called as soon as they had found the problem and made recommendations with openness and honesty on costings and timelines.
Fantastic customer service all the way through to the end. I will definitely be visiting Northside Autohaus for all my service and repairs from now on. Highly recommend Autohaus.

This week was our second annual service at Northside Autohaus, last year our near 10yr Golf TSI required some semi major servicing with water pump, belts, engine mounts etc (as to be expected with age and kms on the clock), thankfully this year a simple service, wheel balance and tyre rotation to ensure even wear and fuel efficiency, along a quick repair to the rear window washer water line which had broken in the section between the car body and tailgate (another semi common VW fault).

Romeo was helpful as always to discuss any issues or concerns with the vehicle, reach out and call to confirm once the team had inspected the vehicle and what they found, providing an accurate quote and ensuring the vehicle was ready that afternoon (with a clean and vacuum also completed!). Thanks Northside Autohaus for the great service.
